3 ways to become a more effective tech startup employee

The success of a tech startup, like any company, will depend entirely on the competency of the people who work there. Even if you are not a top-level manager where you work, it will be good for everybody when all employees work hard to achieve the same goal.

The best way you can ensure that happens is by becoming a mentor to other people who work in the company. As long as you have the skills and experience necessary to help others, that should become part of your job each and every day.

Here are a few tips to help you out:

  • Ask for questions before a meeting: If you tell your advisee to write down some questions they need answers to before a meeting. Not only will this help you set the agenda for what you want to cover, it will also provide them with valuable information.
  • Make introductions: One of the best things you can do for somebody is introduce them to other people in the company and allow them to network effectively. A company is strongest when everybody knows each other and can work with a wide group of people.
  • Use other resources: Just because you are advising somebody doesn't mean you should be the only person they turn to for help. Make sure that the person takes advantage of the connections they make within the company and industry to further their career.

How to keep your work information safe from hackers

When working in the IT world, chances are very high that you will come across sensitive information throughout the course of your career. This means that your computers need to be as up-to-date as possible in order to prevent potential cyber attacks or other issues from outside forces.

Spending most of your day on a computer certainly has many advantages, as long as you know how to keep all of that information protected. This is especially true in those instances when you are working on a project that could have a major impact on your company or even industry.

Here are a few tips to keep your work environment safe:

  • Always use work equipment: When you are dealing with important information, you never want to do so on a personal laptop or electronic device. You should only use equipment provided to you by your employer, as these are likely more secure.
  • Keep the WiFi locked: The internet that your company uses should only be available to those who are employed there. Don't give potential hackers the chance to get into your WiFi and into the machines you are working on.
  • Run updates frequently: The best way to keep your computer secure is to make sure that the software used is as current as possible. If you want to long to make these necessary updates, there could be holes in your security that will leave your work vulnerable to outsiders.

3 ways clean tech companies can survive low oil prices

If you have been in a car over the last few months, chances are you have noticed the dramatically reduced prices for a gallon of gas. This is tied directly to dropping rates for oil around the world, so consumers are now experiencing the cheapest gas in years.

Crude oil prices have basically been in a free fall since July 2014, with it dropping to $45 a barrel toward the end of last week. While this is certainly welcome news for consumers at the pump, it isn't so welcome for clean tech companies around the country. When oil prices are low, they have to scale back.

Here are a few ways they can survive these low oil prices:

  • Diversify your investments: While you will want to have a lot of your money in clean technology, it never hurts to expand your company into other areas and find other revenues. This is especially true if you have a high number of investors.
  • Educate consumers: There is a notion out there that making upgrades to clean technology is too costly for the average person. As this is simply not the case any longer, it is important to get the appropriate information out to potential customers.
  • Shift focus away from cost: Instead of putting all of the emphasis on how much consumers are paying for their energy, be sure to focus on other benefits of clean technology as well. This means promoting health and wellness, particularly if you are a residential energy efficiency company.

Connecticut companies to attend an international tech trade show

The Northeastern part of the United States has emerged in recent years as a leader in technology, no matter what the field. This is especially true when it comes to new technology in the research, design and manufacturing of hydrogen and fuel cell technology. Connecticut in particular has major companies devoted to this area of expertise.

The regional supply chain of hydrogen and fuel cell technology includes nearly 1,200 companies that are directly involved in the manufacture, development and installation of hydrogen and fuel cell products. In 2012 alone, those businesses in this field contributed nearly $1.2 billion and almost 6,000 jobs to the economy of the Northeast.

Now, Connecticut will show how far it has come in the hydrogen and fuel cell world during an international trade show in Germany later this year. Hannover Messe 2015, which will be held from April 13-17 in Hannover, Germany, is the leading international event for industrial technology innovations.

Thee Northeast Electrochemical Energy Storage Cluster (NEESC) and the Connecticut Hydrogen Fuel Cell Coalition (CHFCC), both organizations based in Connecticut, will be attending the event in April. The purpose is to showcase the made in Connecticut hydrogen and fuel cell products, and bring attention to Connecticut as a leader in this area.

"This is a very exciting trade event for us. Connecticut will be represented well, which demonstrates the state's strong leadership in green technology, especially in the hydrogen and fuel cell industry," said Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development deputy commissioner Ron Angelo in a public statement.

Massachusetts tech industry is flourishing

Massachusetts has been a leader in the technology world within the United States for years, but a new report says that things are growing in the Bay State nicely. This is especially true for those who work in certain sectors of IT, such as engineers, programmers and robotics engineers, which are experiencing a wonderful amount of public and private support.

The Mass Technology Leadership Council released its annual "State of Technology" report for the state at the beginning of last week. Mass Technology Leadership Council is the largest IT organization in Massachusetts and is looked to for guidance in this arena. The group says that the tech industry in Massachusetts, particularly in Boston, has seen rapid growth over the last five years.

Across the entire state, dozens of companies have either opened or expanded, with the Innovation District in Boston flourishing nicely in this time period. This has had wonderful results, as the tech sector become the most concentrated in the country in Massachusetts in 2013. This means that tech jobs make up a larger portion of overall jobs in Massachusetts than any other state.

This has resulted in Massachusetts dethroning California as the most technologically savvy and heavy state in the entire country. What experts have noted is the the IT world in Massachusetts is diverse, as the jobs and industry are not tied up in one area of study.

"The remarkable thing is how diverse our tech ecosystem is, from big data to robotics to life sciences," Mass Technology Leadership Council chief executive Tom Hopcroft told the Boston Globe. "Our real strength as a region is the interplay between all these areas."

Governor Baker proposes combining statewide tech agencies

While campaigning for the Massachusetts governorship in 2014, Republican Charlie Baker said that one of his main goals while in office would be to improve the economy of the state and reduce how much the government spends on certain initiatives. In his first proposed budget, Governor Baker appears to be making good on that promise.

The Baker administration is looking to make cuts wherever necessary. The governor is currently considering a plan that would merge several public agencies together in order to cut how much is spent on them individually. If the plan is ultimately approved, the public agencies that support the tech and clean energy industries will be one with the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center.

The new Massachusetts state housing and economic development secretary, Jay Ash, says that state officials from the Baker administration have been talking to business leaders across Massachusetts about the possibility of consolidating these groups. So far, nothing concrete has been decided by either the business groups or by state officials looking to make the changes.

The future funding for the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, one of the major tech groups in Massachusetts, appears to be uncertain. When he unveiled his proposed budget earlier this month, Baker did not have any money listed for the agency, though a spokesperson for the governor said nothing is finalized and that doesn't mean the group will go unfunded.

This plan to combine the three major tech agencies and industries in Massachusetts would be a way to compromise between Baker's promise of budget cuts and the agencies' need for funding. Baker is currently reviewing all state agencies to determine the most effective ways government services can be delivered.
