3 tips for staffing your tech startup

When you are starting your own tech company, one of the most important aspects will be who you hire to work with you. Because startups need some time to become profitable, you will need to find people who are passionate about building something from the ground up.

There are certain guidelines that will help you choose the perfect people to work with, people who will share your vision and want to see it become a reality. As a leader, all you want is to find those that will work hard and efficiently for the company.

Here are a few tips to help you find the right people:

  • Give the best tools: In order for your new employees to do the best job possible, they need to be provided with the right tools in order to help. New pieces of equipment and software will enable them to work well at the outset.
  • Hire strategically: If there are not many positions open at your new company, you will need to find those that can handle multiple projects and responsibilities at the same time. Look for the best tech talent out there, instead of just waiting for them to show up at your door.
  • Provide a clear structure: When you bring somebody on board with your company, they should have a very clear sense of what the position entails and what they will be responsible for each day. This will help new employees settle into a groove quickly and be able to get down to work.

Massachusetts tech company raises $23 million for European expansion

It is no secret that the tech industry in Massachusetts is currently booming, with the state beginning to rival Silicon Valley in the IT world. More and more people in Massachusetts are getting jobs in some kind of tech field, as the industry accounts for 20 percent of all working adults across the entire state. The tech world is truly the way of the future for residents of Massachusetts.

With business so good, many Massachusetts-based tech companies are looking to expand their reach on both the national and international stage. This is certainly the case for FirstFuelSoftware, a company with its headquarters in Lexington, Massachusetts. FirstFuelSoftware announced earlier this week that it has raised $23 million in venture capital funds to bankroll an expansion into Europe.

The technology created by FirstFuelSoftware analyzes the energy use of individual buildings, which gives utilities the chance to see where cuts can be made in order to make the structures more energy-efficient. Those who provide power to these buildings can use the findings to push for energy-efficiency upgrades and better address areas that consume the most power.

This is essential software, as more than two dozen states across the country have passed environmental rules that require utilities to hit certain targets for improving their energy efficiency. With this new venture capital money, FirstFuelSoftware will be able to take their technology to London, as the European Union is working to strengthen its energy laws as well.

3 ways to market your tech startup without a budget

When you first create your tech startup, one of the most difficult things you will have to do is build momentum for the company. This will help to mitigate the risk of your startup going under before it really even takes off, as marketing is a critical part of success.

As you are likely a small startup, chances are you don't have a huge marketing budget, if there is one at all. This doesn't mean it will be impossible for you to spread the word about your business, it just means you will have to work a little bit harder to do so.

Here are a few tips to help you out:

  • Consider crowd funding: This will help take care of both marketing and generate money at the same time. Using a popular crowd funding website will allow you to spread the word of your company while you get some initial seed money as well.
  • Generate content: Having an online presence is essential for any business, but especially for those companies in the IT industry. You need to be updating your company's website and social media accounts every day, providing information and talking about the startup.
  • Word of mouth: One of the most effective ways to market your company is by simply talking to people about it. The more people learn about what you can offer them, the more likely they will be to try your product and recommend it to others.

3 tips to help you fund your startup

When it comes to getting your tech startup off the ground, one of the most important aspects will be getting funding. While the idea you have is crucial, if you don't have the money to develop it, your ambitions will not add up to very much.

Having the right funding can really separate the startups that do well from those that falter. If you are currently trying to come up with the capital to get your company running, there are certain guidelines you should follow to realize success.

Here are a few tips to help you out:

  • Enter a contest: While this might not be the most efficient way to get money, it certainly never hurts to try! There are tons of different contests out there for all kinds of industries, so find one that caters to your business. You never know what could end up happening, or money you could win, or which investors might be taking note.
  • Have employees invest: People will be more interested and involved in the success of the company if they have money on the line. Asking your top management to invest is a great way to raise money while also creating incentives for fast growth.
  • Take out a loan: Of course, the most common way to get money for your company is to go to the bank for a loan. Just make sure that your finances and credit are in order before going this route.

3 ways to keep your work information secure

When you work in the IT world, it is important for you to protect all of your sensitive data. Just as you would at home, you need to take the necessary steps to avoid any cyberattacks or potential hacking from those outside of your company.

The good news is that there are plenty of ways for you to keep your business secure. As long as you are always diligent when working online, you will not risk losing what you want to keep private and protected.

Here are a few tips to help you keep your company safe:

  • Be wary of suspicious emails: Everybody gets those emails that they know can cause their computers harm. If you get one of those suspicious messages while at work, be sure to delete it without opening it and risking your entire company's system.
  • Keep your WiFi locked: As long as people cannot access your WiFi, it will make it much harder to harm your company or steal information. Be sure to only give the password out to people who work at the company and can be trusted with it.
  • Update computer software: The best way you can keep your computer secure is by making sure that the software is up-to-date. If the programs are old, there will be holes in the security that hackers will be able to exploit.

Why aren’t there more tech IPOs in Massachusetts?

While a recent report from the federal government said that the state of Massachusetts' tech industry is healthy, that is not how some see it in the wake of the state's lack of public IPOs. Initial public offerings have to do with the price of stocks when a private company is made public and anybody can become an investor in the organization.

According to the researchers at Renaissance Capital, a firm that researchers IPOs for all different kinds of industries across the country, there have been zero tech IPOs in the state of Massachusetts so far this year. That is down sharply from the one that was made available in the first three months of last year.

The researchers at Renaissance Capital say that trend is likely to continue throughout 2015, although it is not a problem that is affecting solely Massachusetts. According to the group, tech IPOs are down across the entire country, as more and more companies are opting to stay private and not go public.

"I expect there will be fewer IPOs this year," said Matt Kennedy, an analyst at Renaissance. "But that's true of the IPO market as a whole."

Experts in the tech industry say that the lack of IPOs is the dearth of private funding at high valuations. In other words, because these privately-held companies can get their money from investors, they do not need the influx of capital that would become available should they go public. The volatile currency markets also have an influence over a company's ultimate decision.

Hundreds gather at Connecticut robotics competition

This past weekend, hundreds of high school students from all across Connecticut gathered at Hartford Public High School, in the last district qualifying match for the New England Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology district championship competition.

The championship will be held sometime this April in Worcester, Massachusetts. Most of the nearly 40 teams who were competing this past weekend were residents of Connecticut, but there were several teams who traveled from other parts of New England, including Massachusetts and Vermont.

All the teams who competed found out in January what the game at the competition would be, as well as what tasks their robots would have to compete in order to win. Students, mentors and team coaches had six weeks to design and create a robot that could stack a recycling container on top of boxes and then launch pool noodles into those recycling containers.

To qualify to compete at the championship in April, a team had to win at least two or 10 district qualifying matches. For the teams who win in Worcester this April, they will move onto FIRST Robotics Competition championship in St. Louis, which will be held during the last week of April.

At the height of the season there is little rest for the robotics teams, according to a volunteer from FIRST Robotics, which sponsors these competitions. Students are always looking for ways to improve upon their designs, as well as fundraising for the next year and mentoring future teams that are still in elementary or middle school.

Connecticut is a wonderful place to build your IT business, no matter what aspect of technology you work with. If you are in need of new custom database software for your startup, be sure to work with KYO Logic today.
