How FileMaker for iPad helps sell an unlikely service

When people list the things that they're most afraid of, going to the dentist often ranks somewhere near the top. There's something about lying motionless and slack-jawed in a converted office chair while a person wields sharp instruments in your mouth that gives a lot of people serious anxiety. That makes the sales process even more important. 

For a task that critical, Henry Schein Dental turned to FileMaker help. One of the major hurdles for the company was the sheer volume of products and services it offers. The practice provides tens of thousands of tools for both patients and physicians, from overheard lights to sterilization equipment, so consultants have a lot to remember when it comes to connecting with potential customers. 

And it's not just enough to know what something is called. When somebody is going to be poking something in their or somebody else's mouth, they're going to have a few questions about it. Carrying around bulky binders full of information was cumbersome and slowed the process down immeasurably. Instead, FileMaker lets sales executives have access to visuals and information about different products, as well as create PDFs and pertinent sales materials on the spot.

The change to this sort of custom database software also helped the company on the back-end. By parsing the information automatically compiled by FileMaker, representatives can easily see which items are selling the best and kept in constant stock. Having this information constantly available helps to streamline the product process, and saves tens of thousands of dollars in brochure costs for rarely-used products. 

Joe Baucom, Director of Marketing, Equipment and Techonology Group for the company, raved about the possibilities offered by using this kind of technology.

Henry Schein Dental might not ever be able to make going to the dentist as fun as a day at the amusement park. But with the help of FileMaker, they're definitely making the process of selling and marketing related tools as painless as possible. 

When it comes to Big Data, the details matter

A Connecticut FileMaker developer won't just provide your company with answers to business-related problems. It could also raise some fascinating questions. 

Consider, for example, the outcome of an argument between Stanford biologist Paul Ehrlich and economist Julian Simon. In 1968, Ehrlich, an entomologist by trade who had spent time studying the population density of butterflies, wrote a book called "The Population Bomb." In it, he surmised that, at the rate the Earth was being filled up, humans were headed for a collapse. The environmental movement wholeheartedly embraced his research and used it as a tentpole for their platform. 

Simon, on the other hand, was difficult to convince. He thought that humanity was imminently adaptable, and that we would endure collapse by finding new resources or changing the ways we used the ones we currently have. He offered to back up his rhetoric with a commodities bet: in 1980 they agreed to wager on what the market price for five different metals would be in a decade's time. If the price jumped wildly, it would signal that resources were strained. If not, it would mean that society had successfully navigated population growth. 

Simon won the bet easily. Not only did the price not soar, it actually decreased significantly. 

And yet, Ehrlich remains convinced that his hypothesis was correct, regarding the need for environmental awareness. What was supposed to be an empirically provable fact turned out to lead to further contention, not less. Speaking to Planet Money, Ehrlich doubled down on his original stance, despite the fact that Simon had been proved right in one specific case.

"[Simon] knew absolutely nothing about anything important," he said. "[The bet has] become what's technically known in science as a pain in the [rear]."

There are two valuable lessons in here for managers looking to turn to Big Data. One, that the parameters that you set before you gather data are important.  While both men thought that their commodities bet would be the best way to solve their dispute, that optimism later turned out to be incorrect. 

Secondly, Big Data isn't something you can simply plug in and forget about. Your business should be constantly adapting and altering its strategies, to continue to get the most out of its analytical initiatives. It turns out, a lot can change in a decade. 

How Big Data changed Google’s workforce

Google is flush with data. It collects millions of interactions each day, from people trying to find the best healthcare insurance to those just looking for a decent bite to eat. It stands to reason, then, that the company would use some of those capabilities to help its own internal processes. 

Among the most important of those is hiring. Having the right employees is a critical part of effectively realizing your goals, and that starts with the candidate identification process. In Google's case, analytics helped the company identify that the most valuable candidates don't always come from traditional recruitment channels.

Once they were in the interviewing stage, Big Data still proved helpful. One of the major takeaways from their research was that rather than asking a series of random hypothetical questions, it was more important to figure out the behavioral trends of the person being considered. Curating questions that got to the real core of how a person is likely to adjust to a scenario was a much more valuable selection tool than simply asking, "what is your biggest weakness?"

Finally, Big Data helped in the actual hiring. In a company of that size, it can be very difficult to maintain a strongly unified company culture. By ceding some of the guesswork involved to analytics, Google is able to better pick out who will fit in. 

The same principles could very well apply to a company smaller than Google. FileMaker support could revolutionize the way you make hires, and help to mold a staff that fits well into the culture of your company and does reliably excellent work. 

FileMaker could streamline hospital administration

In the past, health care was completely responsive. A patient would come in with a particular malady, a doctor would diagnose it as best as possible, and then they would set out on a course of treatment. Now, physicians are making a greater attempt to anticipate and react to health related issues, before they even rise to the level of requiring a clinical visit. 

For many doctors, Big Data can be an important part of those efforts. One of the primary issues in modern health administration is the sheer amount of infrastructure and scheduling necessary. Unlike the past, when a house visit could be made on a particular day, modern medicine necessitates a level of administration that can often be cumbersome. That is where analytics can come in. 

One of the problems that doctors face is coordinating records across multiple systems. Many things are done on paper and have to be scanned or filed by hand. By using the FileMaker service, however, they can better organize data and treat patients more effectively. 

There are ancillary benefits as well. By parsing the information and identifying trends, a physician can see which patients are likely to come back and how often, knowledge which can speed up their care process. In addition, they can pinpoint factors that are leading to recurrences, and note national health patterns before they reach the level of crises. It could even reduce the incidence of chronic diseases like diabetes and cancer, which tend to occur relatively more frequently in particular populations. 

As care gets more specialized, it will be fascinating to watch how doctors are able to implement new database technology into the age-old process of making people feel better.

Using FileMaker could help your company hire better employees

A strong company starts with the right employees. If the people carrying out your strategies aren't talented and capable, it won't matter how worthwhile your vision is. Thus, being able to hire well should be a priority for any business. By identifying and retaining the best possible candidates, you can put your company into a position to thrive. 

It's a process that could benefit from FileMaker help

Hiring is by its nature an inexact science. Not only do you need to evaluate a person's skills in a short period of time, usually on the basis of nothing more than a resume and a handful of brief interviews, you also need to envision how they fit in with your corporate culture. Somebody who is perfectly suited for the role might not fit in with the rest of the staff. If this is the case, you've wasted your time and prevented yourself from having the best possible team.

This is where analytics come in. Parsing data on your current employees, as well as on the candidates you are looking for, can help you decide what metrics are actually important for a particular job. Potentially talented people who have had issues showing it will be evaluated more holistically, which can take some of the pressure off of resumes and cover letters, both inexact proxies for actual talent. If hired, they will also be much more likely to fit in well with the company, since they would have been selected for traits that make that a likelihood. 

It's a win-win: businesses get the best possible staff, and candidates find the best possible working situation. 

‘Smart plows’ use real-time data to keep roads safe

Residents across the Northeastern part of the United States, from Ohio to Maine, are in the process of digging out from the first major snow storm of 2014. Some areas have seen as much as two feet of the white fluff pile up and keeping the roadways clear is becoming increasingly difficult. On top of that, the below-zero temperatures are making road treatment processes less than effective.

This scene is not unusual in many parts of the United States during the winter months, but there is a new innovation that is making snow removal and road work much easier.

A recent article from the Daily Camera, a Boulder Colorado newspaper, profiled the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the new "smart plow" it developed and is testing in Michigan, Minnesota and Nevada. The process works by analyzing information from several databases including satellite and radar observations, computer weather models and real-time data collected from special sensors outfitted to plows that are clearing the streets.

The goal is to continuously monitor weather conditions and keep up with trouble areas more effectively. This will reduce accidents and save states potentially millions of dollars in maintenance.

"Whereas in the past, drivers would have some new data maybe every 30, 40 or 50 miles, now you could just look up every mile, and hopefully pick up the more subtle small things that happen on the roadway," said Sheldon Drobot, the NCAR scientist who has overseen the system's design.

This is just another example of how custom database software can be used to harness big data and improve an aspect of daily life.

Custom database software spurs America’s Cup win

Choppy waters don't exactly have much in common with an office environment. One thing they do share, however, is that the principles behind Big Data can apply equally well to both. In fact, it was those ideas that propelled Larry Ellison to an incredible win in the America's Cup.

In a sense, it's not surprising that Ellison should have sought to marry analytics and sailing. His company, Oracle, is one of the biggest technology companies in the entire world. It was this savvy that he was able to apply to the design and tactics of his chosen boat for one of the most prestigious races in the world.

Oracle's victory was one for the use of analytics and custom database software. Both of its boats had hundreds of sensors, which recorded thousands of variables. Some of the data points were so discrete that they were measured six hundred times per minute. The sailors themselves were given electronic tablets to use, as well as wrist displays and wireless capabilities. All of this information allowed designers to better understand how the boat could handle different conditions, as well as how close it was to operating at peak efficiency at all times.

All of this data-gathering yielded some valuable insights. Instead of the longer 80-foot trimarans, the team deduced that 72 feet was the largest boat they could easily control. By deciding on a catamaran, they were able to achieve high speeds without sacrificing the necessary portability — boats must be capable of being transported in shipping containers and reassembled within two days. 

There's a valuable takeaway here, even for those not inclined towards the seas: the more information you can process and analyze, the more of an advantage you'll have. 

Could FileMaker be the solution to truancy?

Schools around the country have seen FileMaker support their education efforts, providing meaningful data on student achievement and helping teachers contextualize performance and provide help when necessary. But in order for the software to help students, they have to show up to school in the first place.

Can a database drag a student out of bed and into the classroom? Not quite, but it might be able to do the next best thing.

That's the ambition behind an initiative by the Arlington County school district. Administrators have tapped ten teams of data scientists to analyze anonymous information and extract any meaningful trends that could help them to address their dropout rate. A panel of educators and analysts will judge the most compelling submission and offer up a huge cash incentive: $10,000. 

Arlington's truancy rates aren't terrible: they've been slashed from 13 percent in 2008 to just 6 percent this year. But the county is anxious to do more, understanding that every student should be put in a position to succeed. Crowdsourcing insights from outside data teams is a step in that direction. 

"Increasingly, people are considering this [data] a public resource. At the end of the day, it was created with public dollars," said Chris Kingsley, a policy analyst at the Data Quality Campaign. "If we can publish it and let other people come in and look at it, we can derive more value out of this data."

The teams will get access to information on assessment scores, schools attended, courses taken, grades, absences, demographic information and graduation status. If they're able to extract salient takeaways, it could push Arlington County's dropout rate even lower, a powerful benefit in its goal of providing a quality education for every student.
